- Apostle Lufungula passes away unexpectedly
The New Apostolic Church mourns the sudden passing of Apostle João Alberto Lufungula of Angola. He died last week, shortly before his 55th birthday.
João Alberto Lufungula was born on 12 February 1971 in Cambulo, in the province of Lunda Norte. He was raised in a Catholic family. Due to the civil war in Angola, he fled to what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the mid 1980s. There, through a friend who was a Priest, he came to know the New Apostolic faith. He was baptised in 1989 and sealed in 1991.
Ordained as a Priest in 1994, he went on to serve in various ministries and responsibilities over the years. On 25 September 2022, he was ordained as an Apostle. His area of responsibility included large parts of Lunda Norte province in Angola. Despite often challenging conditions, he travelled extensively to serve the congregations entrusted to him, carrying out his ministry with dedication. “Apostle Lufungula was a humble and faithful servant of God who worked with great love and commitment,” District Apostle Stefan Pöschel reports.
Apostle Lufungula passed away last Friday following a brief hospital stay due to acute health problems. He is survived by his wife and four children. Chief Apostle Jean-Luc Schneider expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and to all who mourn his passing. The funeral service was conducted by District Apostle Helper João Uanuque Misselo in Lucapa, the hometown of the deceased.
