- Growing fears in Kenya
Zurich. The unrest in Kenya has also left its mark on the country’s New Apostolic congregations. As District Apostle Helper Shadreck Lubasi - newly ordained in November 2007 - relates in a letter to Wilhelm Leber, Chief Apostle of the New Apostolic Church, two churches have already been seriously damaged. At present it is not quite clear whether any New Apostolic Christians are among the injured or dead.
In a letter addressed to all Apostles around the world, Chief Apostle Wilhelm Leber expressed his concern about the situation in the East African country. International news agencies are reporting that nearly 1,000 people have been killed since the presidential elections a month ago, and that some 300,000 Kenyans have fled the violence. In the meantime, UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon has also become involved, and has called upon the feuding parties in Kenya to put an end to their hostilities. He demanded that the crisis resulting from the disputed presidential elections be resolved in a peaceful manner.
We will continue to pray for our brethren and all other individuals in the country who have been affected by the violence.
District Apostle Helper Shadreck Mundia Lubasi (59) lives in Nairobi, Kenya. The New Apostolic Church in Eastern Africa counts about two million members in approximately 5,000 congregations, who are served by over 18,000 ministers. In Kenya itself there are more than 1.2 million New Apostolic Christians. Some 10,000 ministers of the church are entrusted with the care of some 2,000 congregations there.
