- Divine service in Ushuaia, the “Bay to the East”
Ushuaia. The “land of fire” lies in the southernmost tip of the South American continent. More precisely, the Tierra del Fuego is not a “land” at all, but rather a group of many islands separated from the mainland by the Magellan Strait. Ushuaia, a provincial capital with some 65,000 inhabitants, is home to the southernmost New Apostolic congregation in the world. On Tuesday, 7 November 2006, Chief Apostle Wilhelm Leber conducted a divine service there.
Ushuaia is also the southernmost city of Argentina. The word “Ushuaia” originates from the Yámana native language, and in the tongue of the original inhabitants it means “Bay facing east.” More than 400 souls attended the service in order to see and hear the highest minister of the New Apostolic Church, Chief Apostle Wilhelm Leber, in person. Citing the biblical admonition: “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3: 18), the Chief Apostle told the believers that the source of this love was the fact that the Lord gave His life for us. “It is not enough,” stressed the Church leader, “to merely proclaim this love in words. It must be put into practice.”
